Football has always been Joe MacDonald’s thing. He started playing flag football in kindergarten and tackle in first grade. Now 14 years old, Joe will try out for high school football this fall and hopes to play for the NFL someday.
The determination and discipline that helps Joe win on the field also helped him win his fight against cancer. Diagnosed with Burkitt Leukemia four years ago, Joe underwent aggressive treatment—at one point receiving over 100 hours of chemo in just five days. Throughout it all, Joe maintained his positive attitude and has some wise words of advice for other kids facing cancer. “It does get better,” he said. “It’s important to always think you’re going to get through it. You’re gonna get through it.” Proof of his own advice, Joe has been cancer-free for nearly four years. For a kid who loves football, getting to design a football uniform for his favorite college team was nothing short of epic. “It’s been so cool to be able to talk football with the players, learn what it’s like to be a college athlete, and hear their thoughts on what they do,” he explained.
The Air Max 90 from this edition of the Doernbecher Freestyle program features Oregon-inspired hues and a modern camo pattern filled with words and images that are meaningful both to him and his Doernbecher co-designers Ethan and Sophia.

HERITAGE
Remember the revolution. 1987 saw the birth of the Air Max lineage, showcasing visible Air for the first time. What began as an experiment in cushioning soon evolved into an icon on the track – and the streets. Over the years, it’s been reimagined and retooled, but the heritage always remains.
