In the wake of the recent Jordan Manila store opening, we caught up with two of the city’s most influential style icons to get their take on how to style Air Jordans for women.
Say hello to Nadine Lustre (@nadine), a creative powerhouse who wears many hats – actress, singer and music video creative to name a few. Nadine’s edgy style and courage to experiment both with her fashion and career have inspired women far beyond the borders of the Philippines.
Alex Bruce (@thurstenalexbruce) is a fifteen year old rap artist who is making waves in the Pinoy music industry with her bold style – both on and off the stage.
How would you describe your personal style? Who are your style icons?
Nadine: I love ‘90s fashion! My style is a bit boyish most of the time. I’m always wearing oversized pants and sneakers with a matching tank top – I’m all about that comfy chic life and tank tops are my staple. Bella Hadid, Rihanna and Solange are my style icons.
Alex: I’m also really inspired by ‘90s streetwear – old school and classic but with a twist of some Gen-Z flavor. I love everything about it from the shoes to the jewelry, clothes and hairstyles. My style icons are Hailey Bieber, Wuzgood from Instagram, and my mom who happens to be my stylist.
How do you incorporate your love for Jordans into your wardrobe and looks?
Nadine: I’m very particular when it comes to color. I always pick my Jordans first and then match the rest of my outfit around it. You can’t go wrong with baggy pants and a fitted tank or crop top for contrast. I’ll mix up my staples once in a while with some statement pieces from high-street fashion brands.
Alex: Hmm, Jordans are so easy to style. As a rapper, street cred wise it doesn’t get better than this. Y’all know what magic this pair brings. In terms of styling, I usually go for baggy denim pants with an oversized tee, jacket, or a crop top. Recently I’ve been stealing some of my mom’s vintage pieces and styling them with my J’s, like a button down denim skirt.
What style advice would you give women who are looking to style their Jordans?
Nadine: It’s all about color coordination for me. My advice would be to go crazy with the footwear silhouette but always keep in mind the colors. I’m really into monochrome right now – it’s a great way to make your Jordans the star of your outfit.
Alex: Wear what you are confident in and what makes you feel bomb! It’s 2021, who cares about what the “norm” is? I see a lot of girls who are afraid to experiment with men’s clothes and footwear but I personally love wearing men’s footwear, especially Air Jordan Retro styles. My advice would be to give it a try and don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone. Be free and express yourself.
