Finding the Perfect Fit and Understanding Pull-Over Bras

Welcome to NAQs, where we answer the questions you’ve never dared to ask about breasts, sports bras and exercise.

It feels like there are a gazillion questions we could answer about sports bras. Today, we’re honing in on these two.

  1. What’s the deal with pull-over bras?
  2. How do I know if my sports bra fits?

1. What’s The Deal With Pull-Over Bras?

It can feel like sports bras are intentionally impossible to get off. If you’ve ever been in a changing room with your arms stuck above your head and a sports bra half on and half off then you know what we mean. Let alone trying to do it after an intense workout when your muscles no longer work. So why are they so tricky? And is there an alternative?

The Pull-Over Pickle

Pull-over sports bras are super common because those thicker, racerback straps can all be connected to the underband, leaving you fully supported from all angles. But being made of that thick performance fabric makes it a battle to get on and off, especially when you’re sweaty. Bigger busted girls then have the issue of shimmying it down over their breasts, which is a workout in itself. So yeah, they’re crazy supportive. But they’re also challenging.

Is There Another Way?

It all comes down to personal preference. What works for you might not work for your BFF. A back clasp is a popular choice as it’s just like your regular bra. Just make sure it doesn’t

compromise on support and that the straps are still sturdy and the underband comfortable. The majority of support comes from your underband after all.

A front-zip style is the ultimate in ease and speed, especially if you struggle to fasten from behind. Some people also struggle with racerback styles because of the ‘back fat’ that comes with a poor fit. Don’t give up without trying a few sizes, because a comfy sports bra is all down to finding the right fit.

2. How Do I Know if My Sports Bra Fits?

How to Check the Fit

We’ve all been there, you find the perfect bra, but after one workout you realise it doesn’t quite fit and now you’re stuck with an uncomfortable bit of kit. But it doesn’t have to be this way! There is a way to find out if your sports bra fits you well, and supports you right.

Different Strokes for Different Folks

Now you know the basics of finding the right fit, but it isn’t always so black and white. Our bodies are all different shapes and sizes and sometimes, certain styles just don’t work for us. It’s always good to try a few sports bra styles out to see what works with your body.

If you’ve got armpit skin escaping over the bra, or back bulges, then it’s probably too small, but switching up the styles might help too. Give the Swoosh bras a go as they’re great all-rounders, even if you’ve got a bigger bust.

Try exploring different mechanisms too. Back clasps or a bra that zips up at the front are both good if you struggle taking your bra on and off over your head. You might also prefer different fabrics based on your shape. High support bras are made with more elastic, so they can feel like they fit a little snugger. Whereas light support bras are designed to help you feel free.
