Victor Cruz’s journey has been shaped by both his own personal passion and the mentorship of some of Paterson, New Jersey’s most dedicated mentors. The Unsung Heroes in Cruz’s life are true pillars in his community and lifelong examples of what it means to stand for your city, your family and your goals. Comprised of educators and coaches, Cruz’s collection of core supporters exemplify the All for 1 mentality that still pushes him to deliver for his family and his hometown, no matter what opportunities or challenges arise.

On Friday, November 15, Cruz returned to Paterson to visit some of the people and places who made him the athlete, advocate and champion he is today. Cruz also brought pairs of his new Air Force 1 Mid to gift to the people who made it possible for him to succeed both on and off the field – his, and Paterson’s, true Unsung Heroes.
First, Cruz made sure to stop by School 21 to visit his elementary school physical education teacher, Sandy Macolina. Because of Sandy, Cruz developed a lifelong love of training and sport at a young age, and it was a privilege for him to gift her with a pair of his latest collaboration, but also to catch up and talk about their past, Paterson’s present and the impact of sport.
From there, Cruz headed over to Silk City Martial Arts, another pivotal place from his upbringing in Paterson. The studio on Chamberlain Ave. is the home of Manny Quiles, who taught Cruz martial arts at a young age and helped shape his competitive confidence.
Quiles still coaches martial arts today, and Silk City is decorated not only with images from the past, but also with certificates and awards that celebrate the achievements of students from a number of generations. Now, Cruz’s latest Air Force 1 Mid joins their ranks as an ode to the power of dedication and commitment.
Finally Cruz made his way to Old Paterson Catholic High School to find his high school football coach, Benji Wimberly. Coach Wimberly’s support and guidance helped push Cruz to pursue his athletic dreams, and his commitment to Paterson mirrors Cruz’s own love for the city and his drive to continually elevate it.
