Established in Amsterdam in 2004, Dutch streetwear brand Patta has a long-standing relationship with the Swoosh. They’re no strangers to Air Max collaborations either, having turned in coveted designs for silhouettes like the Air Max 1 and Air Max 90 that go back over a decade. But in the latest collaboration, Nike handed over the keys like never before. The Air Max 90/95 and Air Max 95/90 by Patta are the first of their kind—customizable shoes born from taking Air Max apart and putting it back together.

Why the 90 and 95? “Both silhouettes are among our favorites," says Patta Creative Director Van de Waal. "The Air Max 90 is a robust classic, and the 95 has always felt like a futuristic design; combining both forms a mix between classic and more technical design.”
The team pulled inspiration from likeminded Amsterdam creatives of the past, specifically avant-garde artists from the 1960s. Those artists, known for their bold, irreverent approach to art-making, saw public spaces as an invitation to write their own message, even when that meant writing over other people’s—and brands’—messages.
The Air Max 90/95 and Air Max 95/90 by Patta debut in that same irreverent vein. They release as part of a broader apparel collection with Nike Sportswear, which includes campaigns from 11 different artists. The shoes draw attention with a popped-color tongue, just like those Amsterdam avant-gardists who used the public square to make a scene.
