THE JEWEL SWOOSH
INSIDE THE VAULT
Born on the Air Force 1, the Jewel Swoosh helped create a one of a kind look for the icon two decades ago in 1997. The new look Swoosh would not only energize the Air Force 1, it would go on to find a home on other icons, such as the Cortez and Air Max 1.
The original Air Force 1 Jewel was designed by the late Sean McConnell, who also worked on the original Air Force 1 Mid.
As for the debut look for the Air Force 1 Jewel, the design was said to be introduced to the world as an Air Force 1 Low in the classic combination of white and blue, and was the most-ever produced Air Force 1 at the time. Several other colorways would soon after release in 1997, ranging from the Air Force 1 Low, to the Air Force 1 Mid.
While the Air Force 1 Jewel was taking over the entire east coast of the United States, the late 90s and early 2000 saw the west coast get treated to a special jewel edition of their own cult classic, the Cortez. Jewel designs were produced as recent as 2002, with a unique iteration celebrating the Cortez’s 30th anniversary.
The Air Max 1 also joined the fun in a variety of Jewel Swoosh offerings. Mostly exclusive to Western Europe at the time, the Air Max 1 Jewel would go on to release in several Jewel-Swooshed colorways.
Now over two decades since the Jewel Swoosh was brought to life, the iconic take on the timeless logo returns courtesy of the three silhouettes that brought it to life during its original introduction.
