Behind the Design: Nike BeTrue AF1
This year's Nike BeTrue and Converse Pride Collection look multidimensionally at LGBTQIA+ representation and interpret those perspectives through timeless silhouettes and color applications. Reflecting the same power of the spectrum in the LGBTQIA+ and allied community, the inspirations behind the designs span time periods and settings. The silhouettes themselves occupy different eras and spaces too, and form a lineup that brings a unified strength in diversity.
Iconic Individuality
"This is the ninth BeTrue collection and we have to constantly rethink how we celebrate the community flag. The Triple White AF1 being one of our most iconic products, we wanted to connect it with the LGBTQIA+ community," says Shawn Ormsby, Nike Designer. "We designed it to be worn universally, so anyone can be their true, iconic self."
Inspired by Inclusivity
With universal authenticity in-mind, the Nike BeTrue AF1 features a 10-color heel mark inspired by the More Color, More Pride flag. To recognize people of color in the LGBTQIA+ community, the colors of the flag were expanded to add the black and brown stripes. The heel mark also includes baby pink and baby blue stripes from the transgender community flag.
The Future is Fluid
From the zigzag cut patterns on the premium, soft-pebbled leather, to the perforated broguing details throughout, the BeTrue AF1 has a truly vibrant look and feel. The Swoosh is made out of prismatic patent leather on top with a pinked layer of holographic material. "The hologram speaks to the fluidity of our community. It’s something we're very proud of. We believe that’s the future," says Ormsby.

While the Nike BeTrue AF1 stands up strong on it's own, the Nike BeTrue collection also features the Nike Air Max 2090, the Nike Pegasus 37 and the Nike Air Deschutz.
