KD12 'The 90's Kid'
Behind The Design
When gathering ideas for his 12th signature shoe, Kevin Durant thought back to his childhood in the ‘90s. He remembered the basketball players he looked up to, the style he saw in music videos, movies, and the expressive, multicolored outfits he wore as a kid.
These memories, as well as Durant’s “millennial OG” sensibility, as he calls it, inspired the “The 90's Kid” colorway of the KD12. The shoe pairs an unmistakably ‘90s, abstract pattern on the heel with lime green, orange, and blue hits — a reflection of the unapologetically loud style of that decade.
“Right around '95 and '96, I started to realize what I was doing as a basketball player,” says KD. “Even though I was still a kid, my friends and I liked the same things, from music to clothes. There were so many things visually that helped us dream a little bit more.”
The KD12 “The 90's Kid” colorway emphasizes the shoe’s performance qualities, including the multicolor Quad Axial Flywire, which provides targeted stability and lockdown, and the lime green sole, which sits below the full-length Air Zoom cushioning that is now stitched directly to the upper. The shoe’s comfort and exposed stitching are inspired by worn-in, vintage ’90s T-shirts, which KD collects to this day.
