Originating in New York, Union Tokyo is a longstanding streetwear boutique in Jingumae, Tokyo. The store features a sophisticated selection of up-and-coming brands from around the world.

Everything from the selection of products to the ambience of the store is shot through with Union's unique style, and the store has now become a launch pad for the latest street culture.

LONO, a native of New York, talks about Union Tokyo and the appeal of working in Harajuku: "You get to play a part in changing the future of street culture. I also like being the first to check out fashion trends from overseas".

"Sneakers provide the finishing touch to an outfit, like the icing on a cake—they can express how you're feeling that day", says LONO. "My mould-breaking style is influenced by New York's wealth of diversity".

Kaho says she feels a strong sense of community every day working at Union Tokyo. "Local designers and friendly café staff often drop by, which can lead to collaborations".

"Sneakers are a popular item, regardless of gender. I think they've become an essential fashion item for women now, too. I want Union Tokyo to be known as a place people of all genders can enjoy".

Honoka says the highlight of working at Union Tokyo is "coming into contact with the background and culture behind each brand. The displays and the atmosphere created by the staff are unique to Union. It's a brand that always expresses its 'Union-ness'".

"Street fashion and culture tend to be perceived as more for men, but I think that by bringing women in, we can find new ways to engage and communicate".
