How did you discover football?
Mara: There was a little pitch in front of my house and a neighbour invited me to play. Since they were friends from the neighbourhood, I thought to myself, "why not? Where there's friendship, there's laughter and good times".
"I never imagined I would make it to professional football. But life showed me that what I thought was impossible before, can now be possible".
How did your life change with sport?
Mara: Football was good for me, it was an environment of distraction and emotional containment. I saw that it could be a tool to overcome barriers, obstacles and things I was experiencing on a daily basis.
"Discrimination ends up being a barrier".
Do you feel you represent the voices of many people?
Mara: Lots of people have identified with my struggle, with each personal victory. I feel that what I'm doing today is opening doors for future generations.
"Sometimes the changes that end up being revolutionary are the ones that cost the most".
What's your next challenge?
Mara: I would love to be able to reach out to FIFA and de-binarise their regulations. And on a personal level, I would like to wear the colours of our country in a World Cup. And if it's not with me, it doesn't matter, let it be with someone else, but let it happen.
