The Nike Air Superfly is back. Twenty-five years after the original shoe’s release, Nike is relaunching the early 2000s favorite for a new era. What began as a low-profile racing trainer has morphed into a running-inspired sportswear shoe for women that retains the sleek, low-top style of the original, combined with elements of modern design.
Why the return? “Now, 25 years later, it feels like the perfect time to reintroduce the Air Superfly to a new generation, letting this distinctive silhouette take on a new era,” says Ellen Lekas, Expert, Women’s Footwear Product Management. “Racing trainers like this one are low to the ground, more minimalist, lightweight and really sleek — and we brought back this model specifically because it offers an authentic Nike perspective that is progressive, accessible and wearable, striking a perfect balance that’s so right for women today.”
The highlight of the Air Superfly’s modernized design is its unique reverse-seam construction. This allows for a smoother fit without the need for a sock liner, giving wearers a deconstructed, minimal feel designed for everyday movement. Fans of the original will notice the perforated medial and lateral quarter panels, bringing breathability and a lightweight feel, while bold green dots on the outsole bring back the track spike placement of early 2000s running shoes.
Comfort is a key element of Nike’s running-inspired sportswear silhouettes, and the new Nike Air Superfly does not disappoint. A hidden Nike Air unit and Cushlon foam midsole provide superior comfort, while an upper constructed of leather and synthetic suede brings an elevated feel.
The Air Superfly launches in a metallic silver colorway — also seen on the Air Max Muse — a clear throwback to the silver anthracite colorway of the original. Additional colorways will drop on SNKRS.
Says Thomasin Hummerstone, Director, Footwear Product Creation, Women’s Sportswear: “The most exciting part of bringing the Air Superfly back to life was landing on the colors and materials that the shoe is going to take on. This shoe has an amazing chameleon-like quality that, depending on how you color and materialize it, can take on so many different personalities.”
The buzz surrounding the release had been building for months, with glimpses of the redesigned early aughts sneaker seen on Nike athlete Sha’Carri Richardson and during the SNKRS Showcase.
Come January 28, 2025, the Nike Air Superfly is available at select Nike retail partners, with a global release date on SNKRS set for February 7, 2025.
